Morrison family driving tour
For fall break we usually seek the sunshine and warmth, but this year we decided to break tradition and do a driving tour which included visiting two families who used to live here. It was quite the experience and one which looking back went very well, but in the thick of it we questioned ourselves more than once. There are several pictures (56 to be exact) in the slideshow that tell the story of our trip, but here is a brief description of our itinerary.
Day 1 -- We drove 3 hours to Frankfurt, Germany to visit the Parks. A Korean family that has daughters in both our kids grades. We walked around Frankfurt (and ate hot pretzels) and then ate dinner at a traditional German restaurant (picture lots of meat and apple wine).
Day 2 -- We said goodbye to our friends (after having hot pretzels with breakfast) and drove 4 hours to Munich, Germany. The drive was beautiful with fall foliage on one side of the highway and winter snow on the opposite side. We visited a museum and then had a beer (and a hot pretzel) at the Hofbrauhaus and dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe.
Days 3 & 4 -- We spent the morning touring the city (after a breakfast that included a hot pretzel) and then drove 1.5 hours to Salzburg, Austria. We walked around the town and made our way to the top of mountain where the modern museum of art is and also a great restaurant with amazing views. The next day we took a 4 hour bus tour all about The Sound of Music movie. Kids spent some time swimming and then we explored the city some more. Dinner was at Burger King (Paul’s favorite fast food and not available in Belgium).
Day 5 -- We drove 3 hours to Fussen, Germany. This small town is the home of two amazing castles, one of which inspired Walt Disney. We stayed at a darling hotel with lots of character and ended up having a delicious dinner there. The kids enjoyed a snowball fight in the parking lot with Paul.
Days 6 & 7 -- After a breakfast that included hot pretzels (we bought Lindsey a pretzel for her charm bracelet), we shopped a little bit in Fussen and then headed 2.5 hours towards our next destination. We stopped at the Rhine Falls which is 45 minutes outside of Zurich, Switzerland. Dinner that night was at a delicious Italian restaurant. The next morning we toured around Zurich and then headed to Montreux, Switzerland to visit our Danish friends who had moved there. We had an amazing home cooked dinner with them and the kids were thrilled to be around other kids.
Day 8 -- Nicholas and Lindsey played soccer with Ben and his friends in the morning and then Paul and I were given a pass to spend the day in Montreux walking around and enjoying the silence while our friends watched the kids. We ended the day with another fabulous home cooked dinner. The kids enjoyed being in house and playing with toys, watching movies, building forts, and playing basketball. By this point we were so exhausted, it felt great not to have to parent too much!
Day 9 -- We drove 8.5 hours back to Waterloo, passing through Luxembourg and France for a total of 6 countries in 9 days! Whew!
