Three and a half years into our two year assignment here in Belgium and life is flying by at break neck speed. I am finding it more and more difficult to sit down and update the blog, get the pictures off our camera, and generally keep up with this type of correspondence. I have to laugh because the first year I wrote a fall family update it was posted in Sept/October when things settle down and get more routine. We slammed past that quiet period and the holidays are already upon us! I’m afraid if I don’t update the blog before 2013, I’ll end up giving it up and I’m not ready to do that yet. Anyway, here’s an update on us. Better late than never, I guess! I hope you can find some time to update me on your life as a lot happens in a year! Take care!
Nicholas -- At 8 and a half, Nicholas has turned into quite the reader! He begins and ends his day reading in his bed. He’s big into series books and has devoured everything by Rick Riordan. I’m enjoying seeing this side of him. Nicholas is still quite active and played soccer again this year. He prefers defense and goalie and really understands the mechanics of the game. He has also been playing floor hockey on a weekly basis with the PE coach. What a thrill that is for him! Basketball season is right around the corner and he’d also like to try karate. We are taking a year off of Cub Scouts to make time for these other interests so no camping this fall! :)
3rd grade has gotten off to a great start both academically and socially. Nick has a new teacher who just moved here from Portland. He has had two long-term projects so far this year and his dedication to get his work done well ahead of the deadline is amazing. You know I love that!
Lindsey -- Lindsey is loving 1st grade and wearing a uniform at St. John’s! She also has a new teacher this year who came to us from Toronto and speaks 7 different languages. She too, loves to read and has started reading chapter books on her own. Library day is a big event at our house! I think I’ll have to get a part time job at Barnes and Noble when we move back to the US.
Ballet has been replaced with Irish dance lessons this year and you can often find Lindsey skipping around the house practicing her moves. She also kept with the soccer this fall and enjoyed the season, although you could often find her dancing on the field when the ball was at the opposite end. I’d really like to get her into gymnastics as she is quite flexible. Legos are now a big part of her playtime routine and thankfully there are lots of Lego Friends sets to be purchased for her.
Both kids -- We purchased a trampoline at the end of the summer and the kids love jumping on that. We still do arts and crafts and family games, but I have to admit there is a lot more time spent on electronics as they get older. We try to sit down for family movies, but those aren’t even as often. We’re still working on sibling rivalry. If any of you have great advice, I’m all ears! :) I remind myself to be thankful of all the amazing experiences they are having as we live over here and travel about the world.
Gretchen -- I have managed to fill my days/weeks with lots of volunteering again this year. I’m still involved with Scholastic as a way to offer books in English to the children at the school. I’m also the homeroom mom for Nicholas’s class this year and not Lindsey’s. I have realized I like to be in control of my own destiny and will try to do it for both kids next year again. :) I have found two other moms to take over the Lost & Found and the Gently Used Uniform programs so that has been a big relief. I am still the co-chair of the Welcome Committee at school and I match up new families with existing ones. It’s a big time commitment, but very worthwhile. Paul calls me the mayor of Waterloo!
I’m still taking French lessons but have backed down to only once a week. I’m making some progress but am still not very confident.
Paul and I celebrated our 15 year wedding anniversary and 26 years of knowing each other in September! We continue to marvel that we still learn new things about each other after all of these years. :)
Paul -- Paul continues to enjoy his job, and the continuous challenges it brings. He has been with ATMI for over 7 years now, and it's hard to believe over half of those have been here in Belgium! He hasn't been to any soccer games lately, but managed to see Dublin for a guys weekend which focused on touring Guinness and Jameson. He is helping to coach Nick's soccer team this year, which has been a great experience. He still manages to golf on occasion, and finds a way to enjoy each round regardless of what the scorecard says.
That’s us in a nutshell! We’ve had a fun fall of going to a beer festival in Brussels, 40th birthday celebrations in Gent and London, and spending time with friends. Hopefully some of the pictures in the slideshow capture our lives here! :)
