Once again summer flew by for us as we managed to keep super busy! School finally ended on June 27th. Nicholas had surgery on June 22nd to remove his adenoids & tonsils and to add tubes in his ears so the end of school, beginning of summer was very low key for him. On July 3rd the kids and I left for the US to start our vacation in Kansas. We stayed at Nana and Poppi’s house and the kids couldn’t get enough of swimming! If you had access to a pool, we wanted to be friends with you! I was able to take the kids to Schlitterbahn again and we had a blast at that water park. I also loved outlet shopping with my Dad. We powered through that mall like nobody’s business. Nana had all kinds of projects lined up as well: fishing, decorating cake pops, designing belts, painting bird houses. We learned it’s best not to take Nicholas and Lindsey into Michael’s. :)
I was able to get away again for for a trip to Chicago to visit my college girlfriends. I love love love Chicago and always appreciate the chance to visit my friends there. This year did not disappoint in the great food, perfect weather, and amazing company. I swear we keep saying next summer will involve the husbands. 10 days was way too quick in Kansas and then we were off to Arizona.
It was raining when we arrived and shocked us all! Our taxi dropped us off at the pediatrician’s office and the receptionist was stunned when I started pulling in suitcase after suitcase. It was comical in the rain to say the least. I was actually surprised that it rained every day we were there. Of course we still managed to swim and have BBQ’s and great time with friends. Again, this was too quick of a trip, but we were off to OH.
Staying at Grammy and Papas house is always a treat because the other 5 cousins manage to “move in” with us. Days are spent swimming at Aunt Amy’s, playing hide-n-seek tag in Grammy’s neighborhood, going to the movies, and rotating between electronics (computers, tv, iPads, etc.) Feeding everyone is always a huge production but we have it down by now. This year we managed a great day trip to Kings Island/Soak City. It brought back childhood memories and was a total blast. We also attended a friend of the family’s wedding and all the cousins handed out programs. We also spent a day in Dayton and enjoyed playing/swimming with our other cousins Campbell and Mollie.
A summer highlight for Lindsey included getting her ears pierced! It was recommended to go to a place that does both ears at the same time and with good reason. If she had only done one ear, we never would have gotten her to do the other! The store was called Sweet & Sassy, which describes Lindsey quite well. I do have to say she has been good about cleaning them. Lindsey is very anxious to buy new earrings and has even suggested they might be a good souvenir gift when we travel.
Right before school ended, Nicholas received the sacrament of First Holy Communion in Brussels. That day was spent going to two other parties of friends of his. We chose to celebrate with family in OH and so both sides of our families got together at church and then for a party at Rule 3. It was the perfect way to end the 5 weeks in the US! The next day we headed back to Belgium, glad that we had survived the summer and all of the traveling. We only had jet lag for 3 nights (our best experience yet, and can’t wait to do it all again next summer! :)
