In May we had a day off school/work and the family headed to Amsterdam for a long weekend. It was a great weekend, with only a few pictures to prove it! We drove to a town outside the city (Vollendam) and stayed at a hotel that was right next to a clog and cheese factory. After getting settled in our room (the kids LOVED that their bunk beds were behind closet doors), we walked over to learn more about clogs and cheese. We got a personal tour and history of both and at the end the kids bought clogs and we bought cheese. It was too funny! (See side bar on the right for more information about the history of clogs and cheese in Holland). That night we spent some time in the town of Vollendam and loved how it was right on the water. The next morning we took the local train into Amsterdam. We took a hop on/hop off boat tour on the canal and soaked up the sunshine. One stop took us to the Van Gogh museum. The whole family enjoyed learning more about Van Gogh and seeing his work. The kids’ audio program focused on information more at their level and it was fun to see both Nicholas and Lindsey completely immersed in the art. We also visited the famous I Amsterdam sculpture and Paul organized pictures with each letter. Lunch was eaten at The Hard Rock Cafe and then we were back on the boat tour. Ironically we didn’t take pictures of all the famous buildings we were passing on the canal. Dinner that night was spent back at the hotel where we relaxed and played games together. Our final day was meant to be spent on a small island outside of Vollendam, but we weren’t motivated. Instead we headed back home to get ready for another week of school.
